How did your career in insurance begin?
I joined a medium-sized broker straight from school, working in the commercial department. It gave me strong foundations and the desire to progress a career in the industry.
And how did it continue?
After 12 months I left to join a small local general broker working alongside the director dealing in all aspects of personal and commercial insurance. After a few years this led to an opportunity to do an MBO and shortly after this Bickley Insurance services was formed.
What brought you to JM Glendinning?
I was attracted by the senior management team – their history, their reputation, their vision for the future and a like-minded approach to client handling and staff welfare. I saw the potential and benefits this mutually beneficial relationship could bring to the business and to our customers.
What do you enjoy about your role?
There is nothing more rewarding than finding solutions for our clients, whether it’s at the start of a new working relationship, at renewal, or in difficult claim situations.
What’s the secret to your success?
The ability to get on with people. And service, service, service. We’re a people centric industry where people ‘buy’ people. My mantra is ‘If the tables were turned how would I like to be treated’.
What advice would you give to someone starting their career?
As above and always be open to listening to others and communicate effectively. If you say you’re going to do something in a time scale either make sure you stick to it or, if not possible, let the person know in good time, with a good reason and a revised timescale.
What’s next for Bickley Insurance?
More of the same and a push forward – very exciting times ahead!
What JM Glendinning Group CEO, Nick Houghton, says:
“We are delighted and privileged to have had the opportunity to invest in Jeff’s business. When we are looking for a partner to work with 99% of the decision is about the team dynamic and assessing if we could work well together. Jeff has a great business with a great team and joining forces now will allow us to grow it together and create opportunity for everyone in the years to come. It’s onwards and upwards for JMG Group now we’ve finally got a foothold in the south. Exciting times!”
